Linear and nonlinear evolution of alpha-particle driven gap modes
A discussion of linear dynamics and nonlinear evolution of modes belonging to the shear Alfvhn branch is presented. Attention is focused to the modes which exist near the gap of the continuous spectrum. A discussion of the relative importance of mode-mode coupling, E x B trapping and stochastic losses is also presented.
متن کاملAlpha Particle Induced Magnetoacoustic Instability in a Thermonuclear Plasma
We show that in a thermonuclear plasma the magnetosonic wave propagating normal to the magnetic field can be unstable. The growth rate is small, however, and the wave is easily stabilized by perpendicular thermal conduction. IN A FULLY IGNITED thermonuclear plasma the fusion energy production balances the various energy losses and the fusion reaction is self-sustaining. The product ions (alpha ...
متن کاملNonlinear evolution of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability
We report analytical and numerical results describing the dynamics of the two-dimensional coherent structure of bubbles and spikes in the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability for fluids with a finite density ratio. The theory accounts for the non-local properties of the interface evolution, and the simulations treat the interface as a discontinuity. Good agreement between the analytical and numerical ...
متن کاملWave-particle energy exchange directly observed in a kinetic Alfvén-branch wave
Alfvén waves are fundamental plasma wave modes that permeate the universe. At small kinetic scales, they provide a critical mechanism for the transfer of energy between electromagnetic fields and charged particles. These waves are important not only in planetary magnetospheres, heliospheres and astrophysical systems but also in laboratory plasma experiments and fusion reactors. Through measurem...
متن کاملWeak Alfvén-wave turbulence revisited.
Weak Alfvénic turbulence in a periodic domain is considered as a mixed state of Alfvén waves interacting with the two-dimensional (2D) condensate. Unlike in standard treatments, no spectral continuity between the two is assumed, and, indeed, none is found. If the 2D modes are not directly forced, k(-2) and k(-1) spectra are found for the Alfvén waves and the 2D modes, respectively, with the lat...
